A attractive official US Signal Corps 'Press Release' (large 25.9cm x 20.2cm) photograph showing British S.A.S. (Special Air Service) troops after Operation HAFT meeting up with American troops some were in France
This is a good example of a so called official 'Press Release' large 25.9cm x 20.2cm photograph released by the US Signal Corps showing British S.A.S. (Special Air Service) troops meeting up with American troops some were in France, August 1944.
The text on the back saying "Yanks meet with a group of British Paratroops which landed behind the German lines near Lassay sabotaged Wehrmacht installations and met the Yanks when the Americans drive passed thru the town". Nice detail is that two (on the far right) of the eight British S.A.S. are wearing khaki berets instead of the maroon ones. Also notable are two twin pouches for the 1911 Colt .45 magazines.
Operation HAFT was a reconnaissance mission undertaken by a seven-man team from the British 1st Special Air Service (SAS) in the Mayenne area near Le Mans, northwest France, from 8 July to 11 August 1944. The operation focused exclusively on intelligence gathering and human intelligence (HUMINT) to support Allied tactical airpower during the Normandy campaign, following the initial breakout from the beachheads.2 Led by Captain Mike Blackman, an SAS intelligence officer, the team parachuted into the region to liaise with local French Resistance (Maquis) networks and Special Operations Executive (SOE) agents, avoiding direct sabotage due to the advancing front lines.
